Retro Revisted Donkey Kong

It’s not often you play a game that changes your life, but that’s what Lizardcube’s Wonder Boy: The Dragon’s Trap did for me. The stunning artwork and animation by Ben Fiquet captured my imagination in ways I’d never expected, and made me realize that even an old game with arguably dated mechanics could feel completely alive, with a little bit of love put into its artwork.

So that inspired a series of drawings that I refer to now as “Retro Revisited.” Old games I loved as a kid and always imagined as being more detailed and vibrant than the technology allowed back then. Donkey Kong was the first I did, because it was probably the first video game I ever obsessed over on the NES (and later the Gameboy — seriously, try Donkey Kong on the Gameboy. That game was decades ahead of its time).
